Sustainability - Rattan
Similar to bamboo but with a stronger solid inner core, Rattan regrows in just 5-7 years making it one of the most renewable resources. Originating in Southeast Asia, Rattan is a tropical palm that grows like a vine and is known to be one of the strongest woods available. Cane is also derived from Rattan, it is produced by peeling off the skin of the core of the vine.
LOW IMPACT PRODUCTION:
Manufacturing Rattan furniture is low-tech so requires no chemicals and minimal energy. It’s light weight also means lower-carbon shipping.
Rattan furniture can be recycled. As it is a natural material it will eventually biodegrade.
The Rattan vine needs trees to grow on, so the communities that grow Rattan have an incentive to keep forests in place.
